Special Projects During the Year
As members of the Viking Class each student will be involved in Special Project during the course of the year. These project are designed to teach
life skills that they will use throughout their lives and to help them understand their place in today's world.
September- Workathon This is a project we do in connection to the Catholic School Workathon. Our Part is to clean the two mile stretch north of Sauk Centre. This is a community service project that enables the students to see what littering can do to a community, and to show how we have become a throw away society.
November. Patriot Pen is a essay writing contest sponsored by the VFW and the American Legion. It is designed to help students have an awareness of what it is to be an American. We also have a Peace Poster contest sponsored by the Lions Club to help spread the idea that their can be peace in the world. Mrs. Peterson Begins her Warm Hearts/Warm Hands drive to collect Gloves and Hats for the needy in our community.
December.- Needy Family. Every year our class will adopt a needy family in our areas that we can help support by purchasing Christmas gifts for them, so that they can have a Merry Christmas. I ask the student to bring in money that they will use, which I match, to purchase the items. We then go uptown and shop at the local stores . Each item is then wrapped , and given to that family a week before Christmas. This project helps the students understand the cost of items . It helps them understand just how much their parents pay each Christmas. It also brings the concept that we need to be aware of those who are not as fortunate as we are.
January -March- Law Making Unit. In this unit the students are the given the experience of being a Minnesota Law Maker. Each student is given the office of Senator or Representative. They come up with bills and then try and pass them. We usually begins with many good ideas , but by the end of the course, we have shortened the number of bills to a just a few. Those that make it all the way through the process are then given to our Real State Representative when we go to the State Capital.
April.- God Child. This project is to raise money on a school wide basis, to support the God Child of our School, Jose. Each Year we raise $375 for the God child and his family to help support them for one year. We do this by having some type of activity. The pass years have had activities, such as HFS 500, Sumo Wrestling, HFS World Series, HFS Circus, Olympic and the last four years, Bowling for Jose. All money raised goes just to this or other special groups that need our help.
May- Game of Life This Project is designed to give the students a taste of what life will be life after High School . Each student gets a career and and income which they use to purchase apartments, cars and additional bills that all of us pay for on a monthly basis. The objective is to balance the budget and learn the value of an education.
